Two men who attacked a petrol pump attendant in an asserted “racist” fit‚ when he let them know that unleaded petrol at a Tzaneen station had run out‚ have been imprisoned for their crime.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said in an announcement on Tuesday that it respected the sentences‚ with the trust that it will “hinder other would-be racists”.
The Tzaneen District Court sentenced Hermanus van Dyk‚ 36‚ to two years in prison and Danie le Roux‚ 29‚ to year and a half.
They had each conceded to be guilty of counts of crime with the purpose to do grievous real damage and infringement of rights.
The incident‚ caught on CCTV footage‚ occurred on June 18 when Van Dyk and Le Roux kicked the petrol attendant‚ who had attempted to escape however failed to.
Van Dyk and Le Roux obviously took after the man and bit him. Another man‚ driving Van Dyk and Le Roux‚ attempted to pacify the two men however was overwhelmed by them.
