Punk is eyeing top prize but has a bit to go before challenging for AEW World Championship.
Since winning MJF, CM Punk has been giving fans the “I want the title” gesture as he battles for the singles rankings. On Wednesday, Punk came face-to-face with the man who holds the title he desires.
After winning a tough match against Dustin Rhodes, Punk backed up the ramp and waved his hands across his midsection again, but AEW World Champion Hangman Adam Page stood to face off with his potential challenger. The contest only lasted a few moments, but it was enough to whet everyone’s appetite.
Page dispatched with his most recent challenger Adam Cole on Rampage last week, and Punk has been steadily climbing the rankings, entering the previous week at #5 and knocking off then-fourth-ranked Penta Oscuro. His win over Rhodes should put him on a trajectory to intersect with Hangman and the world title just in time for AEW Double or Nothing, slated for 29 May.
A Punk versus Page world title match seemed like a fever dream just one year ago, and now it could be mere weeks from reality. What a crazy world.
