Pep Guardiola Praises The ‘exceptional’ Manchester City Trio

Date:

Manchester City earned a welcome first-leg victory over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Guardiola hailed Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish after Kevin De Bruyne’s second-half goal handed Manchester City a significant victory against Atlético Madrid in the first Champions League quarter-final match on Tuesday. The Belgian international struck a well-placed effort into the bottom corner with just 20 minutes remaining to put his side ahead, who dominated proceedings over the 90 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.

Atlético played with spirited defensive effort but unfortunately saw their rearguard broken when De Bruyne scored from a tight angle to give Diego Simeone’s side an uphill battle ahead of next week’s second-leg match in the Spanish capital. After the full-time whistle, Guardiola chose to single out Jesus, Foden, and Grealish for their efforts. Nevertheless, all three players put in the hard graft to secure the result after being introduced from the substitutes’ bench during the match’s second half.

“The guys were playing, but we knew with Gabriel and Phil that they had a special energy, and Jack for the quality of keeping the ball,” the Spaniard told BT Sport. “To be the manager was special.

“Only when managers make substitutions is because it’s going a bit bad, and sometimes it doesn’t work, and it worked.”
